Essex High School hosted the 50th Annual Michael J Baker Classic over the cold weekend with hundreds in attendance. Colchester Laker wrestlers walked away from the two-day event after receiving their hard-earned medals from their podium appearances.
Junior Ben Stapleton defeated his opponent, who was ranked second overall in the state, with a first period pin. The win moves Stapleton up from his previous third-ranked placement into the No. 2 spot. He lost a hard-fought battle to Calvin Leo, the top-ranked Vermont wrestler in his bracket, ending the day with fourth place finish.
With two pins over tremendous competition, freshman Noah Quigley also finished with a fourth place showing in the tournament.
