JERICHO — Three Colchester Cobra earned championships and CHS varsity wrestler Noah Quigley fought his way to a second-place trophy at Mt. Mansfield Union H.S. in the Jason Lowell Memorial Tournament on Feb. 2.
In a busy day of middle-school competition at MMU, Luke Doloughty, Jordan Lavoie, and Keegan Vance all won their divisions, while Tyler Mott, Jaden Coppins, Cam Katon and Grey Brown wrestled to second-place honors.
In varsity competition, Quigley battled through three close regular periods and one overtime before losing in the second extra session. He cruised into the finals with a technical fall, opening the decisive 15-point lead just 20 seconds into the second period.
A week earlier, Laker Ben Stapleton and the grade 7-8 Cobras competed against some of the top competition in Vermont and upstate New York, before the Cobras moved on to Glens Falls, N.Y., for more action.
At Vergennes, the Cobras persevered through four or five matches each, with championships earned by Tyler Mott, Jaden Coppins, and Luke Doloughty. Earning second- or third-place finishes for the Cobras were Keegan Vance, Jordan Lavoie, Cam Katon, Graham Resmer, Grey Brown, and Loran Legacy.
In Glens Falls, Mason Sheltra, Cahota Lafond, Jaden and Brody Coppins, and Sawyer, Shay and Tanner Prouty all finished in the top three.
Next up for the wrestlers was a dual meet in Randolph before the state championships. Middle school and junior varsity states are scheduled for Feb. 16 at Spaulding H.S. in Barre. The high school finals will be at Essex H.S. Feb. 23.
