The Colchester-Milton Rotary gathered last Thursday at the Hampton Inn in Colchester to assemble about 140 containers of homemade turkey soup mix, part of the group’s annual holiday baskets.

On Saturday, Dec. 17 the baskets will be delivered to 127 Colchester families in need. The Rotary is responsible for passing on 40 of the gifts, and the Colchester Fire Department delivers the remaining 87.

Members created an assembly line, each taking a role and adding a different ingredient to the mix. Other winter goods and treats will accompany the soup, event coordinator Ron Lewis said.

A 40-year-old tradition, the project transferred to the Rotary over about 15 years ago. The organization solicits donations, which amounted to about $10,000 this year, Lewis said. Two large donations of $1,000 each caught Lewis by surprise, but were much appreciated, he added.

The group is still looking for volunteers to help deliver the baskets this Saturday at 8 or 9 a.m. Anyone interested should email or call 489-5161.
