Howard Center accuses opioid drug distributors of negligence, deceptive advertising

Howard Center filed a complaint in Superior Court against over twenty opioid drug distributors, retailers, and manufacturers, alleging that the defendants’ role in the growing opioid epidemic cost the center time and money.

The case states that defendants negligently distributed and dispensed prescription opioid drugs in the State of Vermont, resulting in a massive accumulation of unreimbursed costs at the center, whose services often go unpaid. It further alleges that the companies used deceptive advertising and marketing to “spread deceptive statements about the risks and benefits of long-term opioid use.”

Howard Center, located in Burlington, provides substance use and addiction treatment, detox services, prisoner reentry programs, and mental health services for children and adults. The center also has a community outreach team who serves six towns in Chittenden County, including Colchester, to aid local police departments on calls and in better addressing unmet social needs in the community.
