The Colchester Police Department reported Thursday night that a snowmobile fell through the ice in the area of the inner bay at some point in the afternoon.
Around 8:53 p.m. March 18, CPD was notified of the incident by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Colchester Fire Department, Colchester Rescue, and Colchester Technical Rescue responded to the Route 127 access along with police for a possible rescue operation.
However, further investigation revealed that the incident had actually occurred around 3 p.m., and there was no information provided by the caller about the operator of the snowmobile requiring any medical assistance. Authorities then learned through the investigation that the snowmobile had been successfully removed and that there were no injuries involved.
CPD used the incident to remind the public that -- with recent warm temperatures -- caution should be used when going out on icy bodies of water as conditions are rapidly deteriorating.
