Colchester Technical Rescue (CTR) pulled the bodies of two kayakers from Malletts Bay after a flash thunderstorm. One kayaker was found Tuesday afternoon within an hour of the call, but the other kayaker remained missing until yesterday morning.

Malletts Bay Fire Department (MBFD) found one of the kayakers in Malletts Bay Tuesday afternoon, after Colchester Emergency Dispatch Center received worried reports of two overturned kayaks near Camp Edgewater. CTR transported the kayaker, identified as Celine Teeson, 73, of Colchester, to UVM Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. According to Colchester Police, the area was in the midst of a thunderstorm producing strong winds and heavy rain.

CTR recovered the second kayaker’s body yesterday morning approximately 1,000 feet from shore. The kayaker has been identified as John Duncan, 73, from Huntington, Vt.

Combined efforts of Colchester Police, CTR, MBFD, US Coast Guard, and Vermont State Police continued searching till late into Tuesday night but stopped due to darkness. The search resumed yesterday morning with additional aid from Plattsburgh NY Air Unit, Air and Marine Operations, and US Customs and Border Protection scouring Outer Malletts Bay. Vermont State Police also used high definition side scan sonar in the search.

Neither of the victims were found wearing life jackets, although two flotation devices were found with their flipped kayaks.
