Route 7 northbound at Exit 16 was closed briefly about 3 p.m. Tuesday when a Mountain Transit school bus engine caught fire.

Only the driver, a Mountain Transit mechanic, was in the bus at the time, and there were no injuries. He was able to extinguish the fire before firefighters arrived, according to Bruce Palmer of the Colchester Center Volunteer Fire Company.

St. Michael’s College Fire Department and Colchester Police also responded.

Northbound lanes were reopened about 3:30 p.m., and the bus was towed away.
