A group of around 75 members of the police department and the Colchester community gathered Friday morning to witness the swearing in ceremony of Doug Allen as the new chief of police.
“If [Doug] had his way, Aaron would throw him the badge and tell him to get to work,” Lt. Jeffrey Barton said, referencing town manager Aaron Frank. “Something like this deserves a bit of pomp and circumstance.”
Allen is Colchester’s fourth police chief in the 50-year history of the department. He has been with the department 34 of those years.
Allen’s wife, Shelly, and their daughters Courtney and Jessie were in attendance and presented him with his new insignia.
Frank and selectman Herb Downing spoke at the ceremony, telling amusing stories and recounting times when Allen showed his empathetic and caring leadership style as a member of the police force.
“Doug, you have my trust and my help,” Frank said.
