Police say a New York woman assaulted the driver of a car she was riding in and ran from the scene on interstate-89 in Colchester Sunday.

Vermont State Police found 26-year-old Klair West of Fort Drum, N.Y. had assaulted the operator of the vehicle just before 7 p.m. on July 9 while the victim was driving, a press release said.

The victim pulled over after the assault and West ran from the car, police said. She was later apprehended after a K9 track, according to the release.

Police say further investigation revealed a young child was in the vehicle during the incident.

West was charged with cruelty to a child and domestic assault and lodged in the Chittenden County Correctional Facility on $750 bail.

She was scheduled to appear in Chittenden County Superior Court on Monday morning.
