Police: Train collided with unoccupied car on East Road

Colchester police say no one was injured after a train collided with an unoccupied car stuck on the railroad tracks on East Road late Thursday night.

Officers say they received a call from the New England Central Railroad just before 11:30 p.m. on July 20, reporting one of their freight trains had struck a car, according to a CPD press release.

Once there, police discovered the driver, Sophie Knox, had attempted to turn her 2010 Kia Forte around in a gravel area next to the railroad tracks when the car became lodged on one of the rails, the release said.

Knox and her passenger, Haley Palchak, exited the vehicle and were standing on the side of the road when a train hit the vehicle, pushing it about 80 feet until it came to a stop in a ditch on the south side of the tracks, according to police.

The train conductor, train engineer, Knox and Palchak were all uninjured. The Kia Forte was demolished and the train engine sustained minor damage, police said.

Colchester Center Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene after a report of a strong gasoline smell and remained on site until the vehicle was removed, according to the release.

The portion of East Road from Farnsworth Road to Austin House Road was closed to through traffic for about three hours, police said.
