A Colchester woman was arrested after her dog died in her parked vehicle on Monday, a news release said.

Police say Stacey Barrientos, 54, was cited for one count of animal cruelty. She’s expected to be arraigned October 6.

Police responded to the scene on College Parkway around 2:45 p.m., when an officer forced entry into Barrientos’ vehicle after seeing the dog was in distress, a news release said.

The dog, a 4-year-old Labrador retriever, was transported to the Burlington Emergency and Veterinary Specialists where it was pronounced dead from hyperthermia, police said.

The vehicle’s internal temperature was in excess of 125 degrees, police said.
