A Colchester Middle School student reported a clown sighting early this afternoon, police said.

In a press release, Colchester Police said an 11-year-old boy reported seeing a man wearing black clothing and a clown mask shortly after 3 p.m. on Thursday.

According to the release, the boy said he was walking on the bike path when he noticed a man standing in the wooded area between the middle and high schools.

When the boy began to run to the high school, the masked man followed at a short distance, police reported.

Officers searched the area but were unable to locate a suspect.

An email sent by the Colchester School District assured parents school would remain open tomorrow, but asked community members to report any unusual or suspicious activity.

“As always, we are in an active partnership with Colchester Police Department to ensure the safety of our entire school community,” the email read.
