Peter Douglas McGovern, 72, of Colchester, died peacefully and surrounded by his family on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016, at the Vermont Respite House following a brief illness.
Pete was born in Richmond on Sept. 15, 1943, to Martin and Mary (Mahoney) McGovern. He was employed by Vermont Heating and Ventilating in 1965, beginning a career in the sheet metal industry that spanned nearly 50 years. Pete joined New England Air Systems in 1972 and worked there with his “second family” until his retirement on Dec. 31, 2013. He trained many aspiring young colleagues into successful careers and was well-known, loved and respected among his many friends in the area’s construction trades.
Pete married his best friend and wife of 51 years, Alice Fay McGovern, on June 26, 1965, and together they raised their family in Colchester. They also spent 34 wonderful summers at their family camp at the Sand Dunes in Colchester, where they hosted countless gatherings and made many lifelong friends.
Pete was active in many local community organizations, where he was known for his generous and peaceful spirit. He was a life member of the BPOE #916, a life member of VFW Auxiliary Post #782, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #91, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Post #793 and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1618.
Pete was the rare individual who never had an unkind word to say; consequently, he made friends everywhere he went. Those fortunate to be closest to Pete were always welcomed with a friendly greeting of, “Hey, Doo Doo!” (often followed by, “Want a drink?”) He believed in treating everyone with kindness, and his greatest wish would be for everyone to treat all people as he did. Pete will be remembered for his love of a good joke, a cold beer and for the generous heart and hand that he opened to so many he loved.
In addition to his wife, Pete is survived by his son, Todd McGovern, of Colchester, and his partner, Carrie Lacaillade; his daughter, Kelli McGovern of Colchester, and her partner, Scott Gauthier; and three grandsons he adored: Brendan Peter McGovern and Luke McGovern of Burlington and Gage Savage of Colchester. Pete also leaves his brother, James McGovern, of Essex; his in-laws Annette Perras of Fort Myers, Fla., and her partner, Wayne Frey; Richard and Judy Fay of East Bridgewater, Mass., and Louie and Nancy Fay of Colchester; and his many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and too many friends to count. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Richard “Red” McGovern; his wife’s parents, Larry and Elaine Fay; his sister-in-law, Maureen McGovern; his brother-in-law, Joe Perras; and his nephew, John Fay.
The family would like to extend their thanks to his primary care physician, Dr. Christopher Hebert; to the doctors and nurses in Neurology, Oncology and Hematology at the UVM Medical Center; and the staff and volunteers at the Vermont Respite House and VNA Hospice. They would also like to express their deep gratitude for the incredible outpouring of love and support they have received from family and friends during the brief time of Pete’s illness.
Per Pete’s request, there will be no public visiting hours. A funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016 at noon at Holy Cross Church, Church Road, Colchester. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Ln. Williston, VT 05495 and VNA Hospice, 1110 Prim Rd. Colchester, VT 05446.
