Food shelf needs increase at holidays

By

The citizens of Colchester have continued to be very supportive of the Colchester Community Food Shelf when we occupied a very small room at Holy Cross Church and have increased your financial and food donations regularly since our move to the old Colchester Center Fire Station in 2011. You have provided the support we have needed to serve about 92 visits a month, which assists an average of 260 people each month. Thank you so much for all that you provide to those in need.

As we approach the holiday season and especially Thanksgiving, we would like to be able to give our clients a turkey and a few of the fixings that make it a special day. Suggested items: stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, potatoes (fresh or instant) and the ingredients for green bean casserole. As these items go on sale, we hope you will share some with the food shelf. Our freezers will be ready to receive turkeys on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

Please try to drop off donations when we are open: Tuesday/Thursday 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and Wednesday 3:30-6 p.m. For turkey and fixings donations, we will have special hours on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

You can also support the food shelf if you order from Amazon. Switch to AmazonSmile, fill in Colchester Community Food Shelf Inc. as your charity of choice and Amazon will donate a percentage of your purchases to the food shelf.

We wish you all a happy Thanksgiving and a joyful and peaceful holiday season.

Marcia Devino is president of the board of directors at the Colchester Community Food Shelf.
